What Are Your Most Pressing Travel Blogging Questions?

thinking manFrom monetizing to Godfather Google, there seem to be a multitude of travel blog queries and gray areas people want to clear up in regard to their blogs. Across Twitter and Facebook there are some thoughtful and detailed concerns being brought up and I’d like to tackle some of your most pressing questions in a series of upcoming posts.

  • Specifically, what is your burning question about your travel blog or travel blogging in general?

Over the next few weeks I’ll take your questions and give you my best answer and opinions – while inviting you to do the same. I look forward to hearing what’s on your mind from the nuts and bolts of a blog to less tangible things like article content and photography.

Hi Anil. I doubt this would fall under pressing but do you think attending TBEX is worth it? For me, if it’s a good time, where you get to meet other travel bloggers, hang out, and have a few drinks, then cool. But if it’s about hearing long boring speeches about attracting traffic or how to use social media — then it sounds like the type of conference that I got into travel blogging so that I could avoid.

    Thoughts?

      Hi David,

In terms of networking, having fun, and drinks, it’s totally worth the price in my opinion. You probably wouldn’t be able to find the concentration of travel bloggers there anywhere else in the world. People are keen to network and exchange info, and it’s nice to put faces to the…well, digital faces 🙂

The talks were fairly interesting but nothing ground breaking; (though some stood out). The money goes toward the networking, the talks are simply an added bonus.

      Hope this helps!

My blog is having a birthday this Feb, and I want to do a little contest. Is it more beneficial to do it in facebook fanpage or in a blog post? I’m also afraid of no one participating haha.

I’d say the keys to a successful contest are making them very easy to enter and have a prize people want (preferably something tangible). I would suggest doing directly on your site and using the Facebook page to lead people there. Here’s a bit more what I’ve written about contests:

But will elaborate further on it for you in the next few weeks. Do let me know if you have other questions in the meantime though.

That’s a great idea. I guess ultimately we want people to come to our site. We don’t own facebook and we don’t make money driving people there. In the beginning my idea was to have an easy tagging contest in facebook and raffle off t’shirts to those who liked the photos or make comments. Thanks for the direct advice.

Hi Anil – I’d welcome your suggestions about working with advertisers when it comes to running competitions and promotions of their products/services, eg, what’s in it for me, what to ask for etc. Thanks.

Hi Dean, I’d be happy to – actually I’ll tackle this one in a post in the next week or so if that’s ok? Let me know if it’s time-sensitive and I’ll shoot you and email beforehand if you need 🙂

Anil, in the bolgosphere world what are the rules about posting the content of another blog on my blog? Is that generally accepted or not? Thanx

    • Anil P. June 14, 2011, 01:45

It depends on the site but typically most don’t allow full re-posting of their content. It’s also not a good idea for a number of reasons; when you want to acknowledge another post it’s standard practice to post a few lines and then link back to the original.
